Gone in 60 seconds.

My neighbor should be forced to get rid of all the cars in his yard.(1) People do not like living next door to such a mess.(2) He never drives any of them.(3) They all look old and beat up and leak oil all over the place. (4)It is bad for the neighborhood, and it will decrease property values. (5)

Argument: Yes

Conclusion:
My neighbor should be forced to get rid of all the cars in his yard.

Additional premises needed:
something like 1 because 2,3,4,5.

Identify any subargument: 2,3,4,5 are independent and support 1.

Good argument: The premises are plausible so this is a good argument.

I actually did all 5 of the exercises and found them very helpful. It made me analyze each sentence on a deeper level. I had a little trouble understanding what was meant by "Additional premises needed?" because of how they were answered on the example. If anyone would like to enlighten me, please feel free to comment.

  1. haha sorry can't help you there! i was also a bit confused about what "additional premises needed" meant. i wrote about this same exercise, but for that particular part, i wrote, "It’s true that many of the premises given above make sense to this argument. However, perhaps there is a reason as to why the neighbor chooses to keep all his cars. Maybe there is a deep and meaningful story behind each one, or possibly, they were given to him as gifts by someone dear to him. Whatever it is, it’s possible to find more details to each premise." i basically just wrote about the different possible circumstances as to why he keeps all those cars. hope that was helpful! =)

  2. Like yourself, i found "additional premises needed" a little confusing. I also did all five excercises and found them to be very helpful as well. I think the particular example you chose to talk about was very interesting. It seems like having the neighbor get rid of the cars would be the best thing to do but have you thought about what those cars could possibly mean to the neighbor. If you made him get rid of the cars and then found out there was some kind of significant menaing or memories associated with those cars, you might feel bad about your decision. That's just my opinion. Overall, i enjoyed your post.
